After two years in North Carolina following the acquisition of Watts Leaf Architects and further expansion throughout the southeast, Kaas Wilson Architects has opened a new office in the Iron District of Charlotte. Our growing team is a blend of WLA and KWA legacy designers, and through continued hiring, we've evolved into a cohesive team that collaborates across three offices to deliver thoughtful, community-driven design.  The legacy of WLA continues with deep local expertise,  long-standing client relationships and local leadership.

  • Exciting Move to New Office

    As our team grows and our work has expanded across the region, our Southeast Office has made an exciting move within Charlotte, NC. Formerly located in the longtime Watts Leaf Architects space, we’ve transitioned to a new office that better reflects our collaborative culture and forward-looking design approach. The new location at 1023 W Morehead St. offers an inspiring, flexible environment for our team and clients—continuing our commitment to shaping meaningful places throughout the Southeast.

  • Joined the Kaas Wilson Team

    The Watts Leaf firm joined forces with Kaas Wilson Architects, marking an important transition for both teams. After 26 years, Charley and Chip made the decision to collaborate with another firm as part of a successful exit strategy for their retirement, ensuring continued opportunities for their valued clients and the next generation at Watts Leaf. They sought a firm that shared their passion for building community through multi-family housing, and they found that in Kaas Wilson Architects. This partnership has led to the creation of a new North Carolina team, blending all the original Watts Leaf architects with three members from Kaas Wilson’s Minnesota office.

    2023

  • Created Extensive Portfolio

    While the bulk of Watts Leaf’s work had been concentrated in the Carolinas, they completed over 140 multifamily projects across the country with both regional and national developers. The team at Watts Leaf has been recognized for their outstanding design work as well as the community enhancement their buildings provide.

    2000-2022

  • Moved Into Uptown Charlotte Office

    Just two years after forming, Watts Leaf moved into an adaptive reuse of an old stone church at 101 N Macdowell in the Uptown Charlotte area.

  • Watts Leaf Founded

    AIA-licensed architects Charley Watts and Chip Leaf founded Watts Leaf in 1997. Starting in the Carolinas, they grew the business by expanding to Maryland, Georgia, and west Tennessee with both regional and national developers.
